There is no denying that since its emergence in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has prominently sat at the centre of public attention across the globe and will continue to dominate the news cycle - for good reason - for the foreseeable future.

In the last decade, many terrorist attacks have been perpetrated in public places against soft targets. Attacks against sports events are particularly hideous as sports have historically played a significant role in the dissemination of positive values across civilizations and cultures, especially for young people.

Within the framework of the project Mali (Dis-) Engagement and Re-Integration related to Terrorism (MERIT), UNICRI and the International Center for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT-The Hague), in close collaboration with Think Peace Sahel, Conseil National de la Jeunesse, International Alert, and SNV-ICCO-OXFAM, have developed a set of engagement and empowerment training sessions addressed to young people to promote alternatives to violence.

Innovative ideas to address the misuse of blockchain knowledge and technologies

Advances in blockchain are spurring a revolution in the delivery of a wide range of trust-based services, with applications ranging from financial markets, supply chains, consumer and business-to-business services, and publicly-held registers. With this capacity, however, there equally exist new possibilities for deliberate misuse, as blockchain knowledge and technologies become increasingly accessible to organized criminal groups and terrorist networks.
