Turin's days of legality: open spaces in closed places, 10th–13th October 2024

The second edition of the Days of Legality – Open Spaces in Closed Places - will take place in Turin from 10th to 13th October, with the theme A Direct Path to the Heart. This year, the event will explore legality through an unusual lens – emotions and passions – focusing on its most human aspects.

The Days of Legality is an initiative of the City of Turin, organised by the Fondazione per la Cultura Torino, with sponsorship from the University of Turin’s Department of Law, in collaboration with Biennale Democrazia and support from the Turin Chamber of Commerce.

Several engaging events are planned, including the theatrical performance La Classe, featuring inmate-actors from Saluzzo prison and organised by the non-profit association Voci Erranti. Educational activities for schools, workshops for children, and family-friendly events such as a treasure hunt by Forma Mentis in collaboration with Libera Piemonte will also take place.

Many of the activities will involve local organisations, such as the winners of the Bruno Caccia competition, which promotes legality. During the event, coinciding with Book Arcades (Portici di Carta), the initiative will offer public discussions on legality, inspired by literature.

The second Bibliobus of the Civic Libraries of Turin will be inaugurated, featuring the Library of Legality (BILL), a curated collection that is expanded annually with fiction, non-fiction, comics, graphic novels, and illustrated books. The goal is to promote a culture of legality and encourage critical thinking among younger generations. This project, promoted by IBBY, has been part of the Civic Libraries since 2019.

Key locations that are typically closed to the public, such as the Turin Court, Le Nuove Prison Museum, and the Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza headquarters, will open their doors to host debates and discussions on legality.

In partnership with GTT (the local transport company), the Bus of Legality initiative will offer a tour to discover symbolic places of legality, with readings by the Circolarte-Pagina37 association.

Numerous local stakeholders are collaborating on this important initiative, playing a crucial role in raising awareness of issues related to legality: the Revenue Agency (Regional Directorate of Piedmont), Associazione Babelica, Associazione Circolarte–Pagina37, Associazione Forma Mentis, Associazione Libera Piemonte, Associazione Minollo, National Cinema Museum Association, Voci Erranti non-profit association, Associazione Orme, Associazione Spazio Etico, Teatro e Società, the Civic Libraries of Turin, the Carabinieri Command of the Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta Region, ColtivaTo, Fondazione De Gasperi, Fulvio Croce Foundation of the Turin Bar, the Alberto and Angelica Musy Fund, the Guardia di Finanza – Command of the Piedmont and Valle d’Aosta Region, the Le Nuove Prison Museum, the Turin Bar Association, the State Police, Portici di Carta, the Turin Public Prosecutor's Office, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI), and Volucities.

Elena Dal Santo from UNICRI will participate in the panel The Punishment of Others on 11th October, presenting the Institute's work on rehabilitation, research, and prison training programmes worldwide.
