As part of the 32nd session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CPCJ), the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) will hold an event focused on applying innovative technologies in prisoner rehabilitation. The side event Enhancing Rehabilitation Outcomes for Prisoners through Adoption of Innovative Technologies will take place on 24 May 2023 and has been co-organised by the Government of Japan, Penal Reform International (PRI) and the Asia and Far East Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders (UNAFEI).
The criminal justice system worldwide faces the challenge of effectively rehabilitating prisoners to reduce reoffending rates and create safer societies. Innovative technology offers a promising solution by providing access to rehabilitation programmes and flexible, effective prison-based interventions. Growing interest in the benefits of technology within the criminal justice system has led to its use in mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on prison settings. Furthermore, there is more attention on the importance of digital literacy skills and their critical role after release.[1].
However, consideration should be given to the balance between technology and in-person interactions, while addressing human rights and ethical concerns must remain a priority.
This event will gather international experts to discuss promising technological innovations in prisoner rehabilitation. It aims to explore strategies for balancing technology usage with face-to-face interactions between prisoners and staff and examine potential human rights and ethical considerations associated with implementing technology within the prison system.
Join us for this hybrid event on 24 May 2023, from 9.10 am to 10 am (CET), in person in Vienna or via remote access.
Don't miss this opportunity to be part of the conversation shaping the future of prisoner rehabilitation.
