Specialized Course on Cultural Heritage, Crime, and Security: Protecting our Past to Invest in our Future

NEW edition! Specialized Course on Cultural Heritage, Crime, and Security: Protecting our Past to Invest in our Future

Application Deadline: 24 February 2025

Cultural heritage is under increasing threat from natural decay, conflicts, political instability, and organized crime. The looting and trafficking of cultural artifacts have escalated, with links to international criminal networks and terrorism financing becoming more evident. These activities not only threaten our shared human history but also undermine global security and cultural diversity.

To address these pressing challenges, the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and The American University of Rome (AUR) are hosting the 5th edition of the Specialized Course on Cultural Heritage, Crime, and Security, which will be held online from 10 to 14 March 2025. This course supports Target 11.4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, aimed at protecting and safeguarding cultural and natural heritage.

Participants will explore a wide range of topics, including the legal frameworks for protecting cultural property, the impact of conflict and decolonization, the role of the military in safeguarding heritage during armed conflicts, and strategies to counter criminal trafficking networks and secure museums and heritage sites. The programme will offer a unique blend of professional, legal, social, scientific, and academic perspectives, featuring live webinars, group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises.

Led by a distinguished faculty of scholars, UN experts, and practitioners, the course provides an opportunity for participants to engage with internationally recognised experts and peers from around the globe. Through an interactive online platform, participants will build lasting professional connections while gaining a deeper understanding of critical issues at the intersection of cultural heritage, crime, and security.
